When It All Goes Wrong!
Sometimes it doesn't go as planned
Welcome back! (as I’m sure you’re avidly following each blog I write. You are, right?)
So I promised that in this blog I would discuss something that happened recently where things went a bit Pete Tong, and my years of experience definitely helped!
I was performing at a cabaret event and I set up everything I needed. I knew where everything was, I knew exactly how I was going to do it, I thought everything would go swimmingly. How wrong I was.
Just as I’m about to start this particular trick, the table I was using collapsed. I just kinda stopped as I heard a massive bang and slowly looked over. All but one of my props was destroyed, water was everywhere, I was pretty sunk.
However I kept my calm, made a joke about it and played it off as just a gag. The audience where howling at both the massive issue I was having and the joke, and the way my character was handling the situation. My stage hand for the evening went and got me some more water for the effect, and I went and surveyed my props. Quickly a plan came to mind of how I can still perform this, and proceeded to on the spot create something where the spectator became the star of the show. The audience loved it!
I don’t think I would have been able to do this years ago when I started, however I most definitely can now. Years and years of working close up magic and cabaret have pretty much prepared me for any eventuality, and I proved it to myself that night. I kept complete control of the audience while the problem was being solved, and kept them happy, even though inside the cogs in my head where turning faster than a fast-cog-turning-thing.
And now I actively want to add a collapsing table into my act, because damn, it was hilarious!
Thats all for now. Thanks for reading, and let the magic spark on my fellow mammals!
